Thank you for posting these details/experiences hyperwhat . Personally I found these kinds of posts really helpful earlier in the year when everyone was in the dark about what might even partially work for a whitebox server (what with all the new processors and motherboards) and BIOS updates were coming out weekly!
Just one hint for others: with vSphere 5 we can customise the ISO, e.g with extra drivers, using VMware's ESXi Image Builder CLI, so for people who are building a whitebox server to perhaps broaden their skills with vSphere it might be worth using that approach. It wasn't that tricky, but I must admit I can't find the instructions I followed . If you just want to get something working quickly though the 3rd party ESXi Customizer does seem to have a good track record and plenty of blog posts about using it.
